In Samurai Detective Onihei: True Master, the story follows Heizo Hasegawa, known as “Onihei,” the feared but fair leader of Edo’s fire wardens and a samurai detective who walks the line between justice and the underworld. The episode begins when a captured thief named Kumehachi insists that the brutal crimes attributed to his former leader, Chigashira no Tanbei, are actually the work of an impostor. Kumehachi claims that the real Tanbei was a principled thief who followed three strict rules: do not kill, do not violate women, and do not steal from the poor.
