As We Breathe (2026)

As We Breathe (Aldığımız Nefes, 2026) is a Turkish-Danish drama directed by Şeyhmus Altun in his feature debut. Set in rural Anatolia, it follows ten-year-old Esma after an explosion at the local chemical factory triggers a persistent underground fire, filling the village with smoke and poisoning the land, animals, and people. Esma’s father, Mehmet, loses his factory job and refuses to abandon the family home despite the crisis. As illness, financial hardship, and displacement spread, Esma is pushed into adult responsibilities—helping care for her siblings and grandmother while confronting the unresolved grief and resentment between her and her father. The disaster becomes both an environmental crisis and a metaphor for the family’s suppressed pain.
