Black Zombie (2026)

Black Zombie explores the Haitian origins of zombie mythology and challenges the way Hollywood transformed a symbol of enslavement and spiritual resistance into a mindless horror creature. Director Maya Annik Bedward traces the concept from colonial Haiti and Vodou traditions through landmark films such as White Zombie, Night of the Living Dead, and The Serpent and the Rainbow. Combining archival footage, vérité filmmaking, cultural history, and interviews with Vodou practitioners, scholars, artists, and horror legends, the documentary reclaims the zombie as a story of survival, stolen agency, resistance, and Black identity. It features Yves-Grégory François, Erol Josué, Mambo Labelle Déesse, Slash, Tom Savini, and Tananarive Due.
